If it's any help, demeter, the coded letter pair is the same in both of those. The easiest way into 6,22 is through the bloodsucker.

6,22 Coded pair is in the first word, second clue starts Struck. Mauritius as in international vehicle reg after a type of bloodsucker that jumps. Second clue is a soundalike of struck fear into island.

7,13 Coded pair in Flayers. Second clue starts at Rush. Def for first clue is past all that as in old expression for all that. Trouble as in sad. About written backwards. Second clue def is first four words. Cant like a ship might be at sea, short god, taj mahal.

I've come to this a bit late. Solved all the double clues apart from 12, still have to solve 25. I have the second Playfair (ie the one used in the double clues) but I have proved (or so it seems) that the first Playfair can't exist - so a mistake somewhere. Is it right to assume that the code phrase is of the form xxxx BY xxxx (the number of x's not necessarily 4)?

cockie, if you are relying on on-line Playfair breakers then you will be (mis)informed that no solution exists. With a few exceptions, they can't cope with codephrases. So it's likely that you haven't made a mistake.

Really struggling to get any where with the first play fair code though I have the one for the double clues. A little help with 11,31 would be much appreciated to give me another pair of letters for it. Thanks in advance

throck - no, I decipher Playfairs by hand, but 4 of my pairs are self-contradictory, requiring 6 letters in a line. Clearly I have an error. Is my belief about xxxx BY xxxx correct?

11,31 Coded letters in first word, second clue starts on account of. First clue is E(arl), word for generous (gassy), expression for pardon all reversed. Second clue def is on next page (cricket....trees/plants)
