and yet again, the main difficulty I've found is decideing which are the superfluous words in the clues.

have matched up a few of the unclued but could all be wrong:
extra word in 18a = 23d
extra word in 14a = 17a
extra word in 40a = 29d
I have a lot of blanks in bottom left corner - any help would be good!

For Zardoz - I worried about 20 ac for a long time, as there didn't seem to be a letter that you could change - htought I'd got that area wrong. However, there is another word (dear Chambers again) and easy when you've got the theme.

Yes please - a clue for "the eight of a kind" would be good.

Well, I think it's a pretty kettle of ????
I'm also stuck with the bottom left corner - 30 d mostly.

30d Zardoz helped with start of this VA plus a word for ship -normally associated with part of a ship= native agent.I hope that helps but I have probably confused you!

* thanks for the KETTLE tip, though still unsure how some of them transform.

sudokulover: maybe 41a = 29d? Think Magic instead of Logic. Then 40a = 42a. Could be totally wrong.

Anyone have a hint for 2d? OTHI? Not in my pantheon.

Also, 17a & 4d seem to be the same. Dumpynose can be wicked. (& I don't mean a candle)
