Quite, should not be allowed really, there should be a gap to be respected.

Anyway, it does not change the fact that France played rubbish and deserved to lose - In fact I was not impressed with them in the 6 Nations and I think that had we been in a tougher group than group D, we might be out already !
In fact I think it strange that that NZ abd Argentina ended up in the same group to start with.

I am definitely supporting Wales - I think they can beat South Africa; Japan did!

Nearly finished "A god in ruins" - still not sure. I don't think I'll be reading the Booker Prize winner.

Where is everyone? Where is elle?

Well I've finished it, and I feel like writing to the author to ask for several hours of my life to be refunded.

I realise that this won't encourage anyone else to read it, and hence stultify further discussion!

Chris-
I've read some reviews and they alternate between ecstasy and "mind-numbingly boring"; though to be fair, more on the first side. I refuse to read any war (or spy) books whatsoever so not going there!
Why did you not give up? Was it because, like "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", everyone said it starts slowly, but it's worth pursuing (as that one certainly was), or because you thought "It must get better"? I read between 4 and 5 novels most weeks and if I am not engaged by about page 75 I give up.
I'm currently reading "Breaths of Suspicion" by Roy Lewis and it's getting near page 75......

Hi Rosalind
I kept on because I thought it must get better, and also I've liked other books by the author - I finished Ishiguro's "Buried Giant" for the same (unsatisfactory) reasons.

Why I carried on to the end of Eleanor Catton's "The luminaries" I have no idea!

Hi Chrise,

This is the main problem about keeping this thread alive - no one seems (me included) to have much to say of any interest.

BTW, Shame about Scotland !

I have been reliably informed Scotland really wuz robbed, since the penalty shouldn't have been awarded. However, I am clearly not watching rugby!
Has anyone else been to see the Goya exhibition? Or is sad because that brilliant Simon Schama series is over? I thought he was about to cry at one stage.
I did the touristy thing of going up the Shard last Saturday and having some champagne at the top. It is amazing up there- St Paul's looks tiny!
No Hallowe'en visitors yet

Weird! We haven't had any Alloaeen visitors either yet, despite having a pumpkin lantern on the doorstep. (Our daughter may have to eat a lot of sweets!)
