Thanks for the receipe Rosalind - I shall have a go at poaching it - I do remember that there was a sort of creamy liquid around it, thus probably the milk.

Can't be bothered to make fish cakes and all the trimmings for me on my own!

It is true that I read Christie Brown's book a geat number of years ago now. On the other hand, I have just had a peep on Amazon site and, surprisingly, Skallagrig appears nowhere.

I am thinking about spending Christmas in Cumbria with my friends, so I shall get a copy while in England;

Skallagrigg has been out of print for a long time. A hardback in good condition with dust jacket can fetch £50. Chrise's cost 83 p plus postage so bargains can be got!
I can't be bothered to make fishcakes, either.

Ok, I have ordered the book from ABEbooks.
I chose a hardback one (can't stand paperbacks) and with shipping etc it will cost me 4 dollars something, which with the current rate of exchange will be in the region of 5euros something - That is good by French book prices.

It will probably take ten days or so for delivery, or so they say; well, considering that until a few days ago I had never heard of the book, I am sure an extra ten days will not make much difference !

BTW Doglet, how are you getting on with The Forsyte Saga? I am presently watching the DVD version, started last night - seems interesting and a good insight into English society towards end 19th Century.

Elle, you are re-reading Jane Austen aren't you? which book? or are you reading something different?

I've been reading all the comments about "Skallagrigg" with great interest.
I think this will be next on my buying agenda. I see that there are several copies available on Amazon - paperback ones costing 1p plus postage. Sounds very reasonable.
Yes, Pigale, I have been re-reading all the Jane Austen books, although at the moment I am reading something different. I have but one more Jane Austen to g;, I still have to reread "Sense and Sensibility".
I have also unearthed "God is an Englishman" which you were speaking about a little while ago!

Elle, how come you found Skallagrigg on Amazon and I did not ? Anyway I bought it through Abebooks now, but I did have a look at Amazon.fr first !

A Horseman Riding By and To Serve Them All my Days are next on my DVD agenda - I have read both a fair while ago and will enjoy seeing the filmed version. Am still sorry that God Was an Englishman and the follow up are not available on DVD though.

"To serve them all my days" was based on West Buckland School, near Exmoor (though the TV film wasn't filmed there, as it had been modernised too much).

When I was at school in Barnstaple, we used to play them at rugby and cricket. I took my only hat-trick there, the year I captained the under 15s - we didn't have a game, so I was picked for the Second XI, and bowled the first over, taking wickets with my fourth, fifth and sixth balls.

ChrisE, I am afraid that I would be a little hypocritical if I congratulated you, because quite frankly, you are talking chinese to me! I am so sorry - yet, something tells me that you achieved some sort of record on that day - so well done, just in case I have guessed right!
