Aristo, as a check, 1d is in Chambers 12th as an archaic meaning.

aristo - your "Battle Hymn" ref is one of the words I'd narrowed it down to, but the "humour" bit still escapes me. I'm also now twitchy about 41dn. I've got he only plausible answer to 1ac, but I can really parse it.
