Oops - into the ether. Too bad we can't retract a post.

The following is from an e-mail to Les. (the solution hadn't been posted yet & I didn't want create any spoilers)

The few British bits were a challenge. Had to Google 3 films I had never heard of, KES, TIE, & TRP.
The reason I couldn't find the last one for a while was because the quote had a typo. Not yours.

You know how it is on the Net. They copy & link to each other, so the same errors pop up all over. It's even on IMDB (3rd quote):
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0059406/quotes
"Tim, I dislke this business ..."

That was misspelled practically everywhere I hunted.

Looks like everyone had fun. Don't know how you find the time, but we all appreciate it.

Well done, mate!

Have suggested an "alien" theme.

Lionheart's 2D, right above my 20D, also had an alien.
The cartoon ties in with peterm's 57A:

Les

The problem for me with themed puzzles is that once the theme has been cracked, it becomes pretty easy to work out (or find) the themed answers. So, if you can crack the theme early on, the whole puzzle becomes much easier. But a tricky, accessible theme can add another dimension to a puzzle.

The issue with this puzzle was that we knew the theme at the outset, and it was non-cryptic, so it became an exercise in Googling rather than a battle of wits. Although I knew and had seen of all the films bar one, I would never, ever had got any of the quotes without Google.

None of this matters though. It was an excellent puzzle.

Cheers peterm,

I see what you're saying, I think I will keep it simple next month with just cryptic clues.

Simple? maybe that was the wrong word to use, let's face it, the crossword ends up far from being simple.

Thanks for the comment, I do take notice of your input.

The only film I "got" was Coming to America but then again, it's hard to ignore the fact that the Prince was having his thingy washed, isn't it!

Had I had computer access, I'd have googled, but I didn't. What's more, is that I try only to google when I'm completely stuck as I spend enough time on the net mucking about anyway.

I'd prefer a straightforward cryptic as I think the various setters are challenging enough (for me) already.

Thanks Les, I'm very much looking forward to the May JE.

Well, Wendy, that's American "culture", and it's gotten a lot worse. "Lewd, crude, & stupid" has become the norm, which is why I tend toward British films. However, some of those are going the same way.

If you can find them, try NZ & Oz. The exports are usually excellent.
