Does anybody else feel that this all seems very arbitrary?

I've just (hopefully) solved one - a month wont be long enough at this rate!

I've got a few now, but it's hard work. Definitely a marathon, not a sprint.

Finding this hard going with only a few in and, yes, a bit arbitrary. Also not helped by the fact I can't read the clue to 8 down. Is the first word TUM or TURN? The letters are a bit squashed. Thanks in advance.

For the answer to 21d I have a word which relates to the gentry. Anyone agree?.

To Rob Pendragon - I've been out all afternoon, and have only just seen your earlier post. Yes, I felt that it seemed arbitrary, but I suppose the point is that when the grid is finished( ?) we shall know whether we had the right answer. I've filled 21d very lightly, and shan't know whether or not it's correct until the across answers go in. Another difficulty!

21d is one I'm fairly sure of AJT - the answer(as I get older)often applies to me.

for "answer" I mean completed passage of course.
