Rob P - my word means finishing, but it will be different in the resulting passage. I've googled the resulting passage, and it doesn't come up with anything.

I haven't got 4A yet but I'm going with what we clearly share for 7D. At the moment, that's the least of my worries.

I am completely baffled by 1d. Have you done that one?

Is 2D another town? The passage doesn't make a lot of sense - fog in a play?

1D the gap is between Close's//rally

Reading the clue aloud hasn't helped yet, but I'll keep trying.

I've got an answer for 1dn, but it's not 100% convincing. If I'm right, the passage starts with the final s of "close's" and adds a bit to the front of "rally".

I think you've got the right answer but the break comes later in the first word.
Any clues to 25d?

2D is a city

1D is inserted as you describe peterm - mines makes reasonable sense

Thanks about 2D – yes, it’s a character. And I agree about the position of the insert in 1D.

Only 17 to go now (why do I bother? – I usually love hitting the submit button at the end of the first day, but no chance this time).

I have absolutely no idea about pork, Ferdinand, old tits, or designated males, but my wife is off for a week with her family, so at least I’ve got plenty of time.
