Jolan must be in church counting things (angels on the tip of a pin?).
i feel i opened the door today and a devil flew in.
An honest mistake and the devil is just a laughable tit.

good clues i thought.

Sammy and Tonyw - I am pretty certain it is not char for 3. Key word in clue is "vocal"

I know that, chrisg: as I said, that is the bit I can't get!

When I was trying to solve it originally, I was looking for some word that meant cleaning in an old-fashioned sense. Something like scrubbing the step, scouring, blueing, boiling in a copper...but with some punning reference (vocal indicates sound).

If I say any more Sammy I will give the answer away...but I could be wrong anyway. If I am wrong I will donate a fiver to my charity (Local hospice)

I know you can't say!

And I still can't get the reference. I'm thinking of washboards, mangles, starching, bleaching and all sorts and am probably miles off!

VOCAL could signal many things. I've thought of lots but not seen how they solve this clue. It could indicate a pun as I was thinking all along or it could indicate a word that means vocal, (LOUD for example, or ORAL or a vocal performance such as SONG, DUET...) Now, what has any of that to do with clean?

You're absolutely right Chrisg post 22.

What a crying shame about XX, eh? Kinda buggers up Jolan's 5. And we were having such fun. XX clearly cannot see a homophone-type clue as not containing the same spelling for the word and its homophone (clever-bootsie and all as he seems to think he is).

Rather pointless hanging on till 5 now, isn't it? I will anyway.

Terry, I'll have another 'read' of your idea. I'd imagine it would be the target for all the loonies out there. Maybe XX would start things rolling as he is so brilliant.
