There's a couple I'm not sure about. Happy to exchange notes.

The wordplay for 17th across clue and 16th down clue elude me - are you able to hint without spoiling it for others?

Thanks

The down clue is, I think, just the actor's first name with "i" in, and a reference to Aladdin.

Not sure about the across clue. The definition is clear enough, can't see the wordplay.

What do you make of the reference to Churchill in the 5th across clue?

bit of misdirection - I think it refers to the river

Spot on. It certainly misdirected me - I'd never heard of the river before!

I think there's got to be a bit more to the 16th down why(say)and the "nd part otherwise.

Also not sure how the 4th down works - I can see a chess man and a military man and a behold!, but not convinced.

I, too, am not wholly convinced about the 16th down, but it sort of works for me.

It looks like we share misgivings about the same clues, because I also don't understand the 4th down.

I'll check again tomorrow.

17th across is one of the "as" type clues!

16th down: i in Gene. The second sentence of the clue is a play on me. me = Genie doesn't have to be in a bottle.

4th down: 'men depict' + 'koala' (signified by 'this') is an anagram of 'pocketed animal'.

A tough but enjoyable puzzle.
