Thanks, Ixion. Is the firts letter of the first down clue 'k' or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I have G but I've just started. Certainly could be wrong.

Yes I have G starting the first down clue (3,9) and also 1a starting with G

For the first 2 Across clues, I've got 2 x 5 letter answers. If they're right and they go in the first line of the grid, there are 2 "spare" squares. I haven't yet worked out any of the opening Down clues. This is tough. All ideas gratefully welcomed.

the downs at either extreme are 12 letters and two words
