Had to dig deep in the OED to find red:
"Chiefly U.S. A cent; = red cent"

Thanks Jockster and Peterm

Final niggles requiring clarification...

26D - DO-o-co-T - marriage portion(dot) round love and c/o ...
How does this relate to "lassie's modern kind of lover"?

18D - Is this yall or yawl? - was still(lay)upside down (yal) little in hold l? - is yall a variant spelling in Chambers?

Thanks

ixion

Hello again Ixion - only YAWL is in my Chambers, although your logic is good. I've posted it off with YAWL so heigh-ho , we shall see!
Finished Mephisto now after quite a struggle!
Have a good Xmas & New Year!

I've got yawl for 18dn, but I'm not entirely clear on the wordplay. I couldn't find yall as an alternative anywhere, though it seems to make more sense. I'm also puzzled by doocot. I've got roopit for 38ac, but am unsure where "old man" fits in.

23d is, I think, "yawl" - "lay" reversed around "w" = "little with".......especially as "yall" isn't in Chambers.
