It was new to me that word we know as the brownish grey colour comes directly from the French mole. I’ve never seen a French mole but now I know what to look for :-)

I am down to last two:

'Man-eater only' ((6) - across, in NW) and 'Amanda takes'. ((4) - down column 12).

I have spaces for my missing two pairs. I am guessing two answers and both can't be parsed.

I hope is not due to wrong grid entry issue.

I think you have Amanda in the wrong place. I have that clue crossing with the man eater in the NW.

Man-eater - first 4 letter/'only half himself' of "man-eater" and this goes around the theme letters at 4 and 5 - definition is "biblical land" (a specific place)

Amanda.. - I think this is the "heart" of "Amanda" then the 2 theme letters - definition is the whole clue so a "girl" (name)

... but the girl isn't in column 12, she crosses with the biblical land.

There are four 4-letter solutions that each ends in an A that I found the trickiest to place (assuming I have it right even now).

Many thanks Brendan of this intervention which. means that I have now completed the puzzle. The concept is commendable but some details disappoint. The conflict round the intersection of the stop and the head cold has been exposed. I do not think that the 5 letter L clue is acceptable and the hoopla clue should be 4,4.
Sorry to moan but this sort of clueing takes the edge off a first class piece of work,

Jono, I had the same problem.

I put the 4 letter "war zone" answer where the "small boat" goes but I hadn't solved that, then and so, when I did, I had nowhere to put it.

Sorted it out though so all's good:-)

Same for me Bren, and I had a more obvious (I thought) girl’s name for the longest time which could only be eliminated at the very end.
