It was new to me that word we know as the brownish grey colour comes directly from the French mole. I’ve never seen a French mole but now I know what to look for :-)
Man-eater - first 4 letter/'only half himself' of "man-eater" and this goes around the theme letters at 4 and 5 - definition is "biblical land" (a specific place)
Amanda.. - I think this is the "heart" of "Amanda" then the 2 theme letters - definition is the whole clue so a "girl" (name)
Many thanks Brendan of this intervention which. means that I have now completed the puzzle. The concept is commendable but some details disappoint. The conflict round the intersection of the stop and the head cold has been exposed. I do not think that the 5 letter L clue is acceptable and the hoopla clue should be 4,4.
Sorry to moan but this sort of clueing takes the edge off a first class piece of work,
