Thanks for that. I assumed that it was an anagram, but had never heard of the French expression. Also the letter count is slightly misleading, in that the second word contains the 8 letter word that I had found - sort of.

Although for some reason I associated 'redoubtable' with a fictional Jane....but I got there in the end. 😊

Oh, the hint was perfectly pitched Malone...I just rather rushed in and found out a bit more about Jane E than I needed to before I stopped and concentrated on the already encountered bit! 😊

Thank you Will37. Since posting I saw the theme but remain stumped on the seven-letter 'summer dresses' unclued light. The answer may come to me during the next day or two.

There are actually 2 7-letter unclued lights. One is part of a pair; for the other one malone gave a gentle steer @10.

I have unsolved unclued entries at 12 down and 36 down, reading
_ L _ A _ and B A _ . Are they connected? A nudge much appreciated.

No, those two are not connected/ 12 D stands alone and 36 D joins up with another short entry...
