Help with 4a please. I have a word for snare reversed to give me a nitwit, but the middle two letters seem to be in the wrong place in the diagram ?

It's OK, I think (I didn't do the puzzle. It looks like the grid entry is the nitwit. The protective cover is an abbreviation of a longer word.

Thanks for the replies, but Chambers doesn’t have “protective cover” as a definition for snare.

Snare doesn't feature

You mean snare doesn’t feature in the clue ?

Nitwit in snare taken aback (4)

I can’t get a reversed 4 lettered shortened version for a big sheet of canvas from this.

I haven't seen the paper, but the clue online is:

Nitwit in protective cover taken aback (4)

No snares!

Update . The online clue is different to that in the print version. Setter must have realised his error and changed it after it had gone to press. Happens.

That explains nearly all, though if a clue is corrected, there are usually "Special Instructions" to say so, but not in this case.
