Re. the title... disregarding the opening indefinite article (as I think that's just there to reference the J B Priestley play) I interpreted it as an aural allusion to the pre-modification 1a (with a preposition that describes the post-modification 1a's relationship to it) followed by a simple synonym.

I do hope that is helpful, yet simultaneously suitably obtuse for anyone who hasn't yet twigged the theme!
