I was hoping to find clarity on 12a! I think I have it...
Also for guidance on 7d. I think extra letter should be I but can't solve the clue.

Lumen, the I comes from the last word of the clue, which becomes the past tense of a verb - and is an anagram indicator.

Thanks fgsltw and drxx, not a word I've seen before but it should help me get into the NE corner.

Hello gang; got a full grid other than 13D - "SECURE PLACES IN COMBINED OPERATIONS COMPANY CLOSE TO SQUARE" (7) - but can't see what any of the alterations to the perimeter clues have in common or indeed what I'm meant to do now.

Little hints on both would be useful please - thanks :)

There's a big hint for the perimeter changes at #4.

Initials for Combined Ops, usual abbrev 'company', 2 letter synonym for 'close to' and single letter abbrev 'square' (def 'Secure places').

Hi thorn, I never did understand that clue or the reason why we had to treat the perimeter words as we did. I did follow the instructions to identify the letters and then linked them as instructed to form a 3D shape. The letters identified spell out the special name of that shape and is the phrase to be written underneath. Beyond that I don’t think there is anything. A bit underwhelming I think, unless I am missing something.

Blimey, that was tough for this solver. I wouldn't have sniffed the end-game without drxx's tip at #2, for which many thanks.

I found the clueing really tricky in parts, but thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. A full three hour solve. Thank you, Ifor👍
