Thanks ChrisE, I had no idea what Geiger's first name was either. The fun has been sucked out of this puzzle by the setter's reliance on specialist knowledge - see the first post in this thread. I'll add the word 'escapement', which was needed for another answer. Apparently it's a watch part, but how many people can be expected to know that?
