Yes, quisling, I was a fan too and I just can't reconcile the use of his full name - but even under their correct names they were never spoken of as a double act as such (unlike the other two). It might have been better to have simply barred-off that last letter and ignore the symmetry.

Still, I'm in no doubt your version of the endgame is the right one - it's just that (and not for the first time} I'd rather stick with something I'm a little happier with... as weird as it is.

No - on the symmetry front that would leave a double unch.

On the subject of unches - did you spot the triple unch in a Guardian puzzle a couple of days ago? It featured a short word that destroyed grid symmetry into the process. The odd thing is, there's a regular phrase that would have fitted the longer space and it would have removed both imperfections at a stroke.

Not a puzzle I do, but I found it. Absolutely bizarre decision to wreck the symmetry for that, when the alternative was not in the least obscure

I do all of the Guardian puzzles every day (they're free} and I waded through three pages of comments on that one and it didn't even get a mention!

Which Guardian puzzle was that, please?

It's very recent (Quick 17,079) and I really should have checked that before mentioning it (sorry, quisling - glad you found it quickly).

The Quick, I see, yes that’s ugly, and unnecessary.

I was curious because Guardian Cryptics use a grid library that does contain one grid with three unches. Hugh, the previous editor, banned its use!

Thanks, jono - I'm glad it was banned but how did it ever get started (3 unches is unheard of)?

Thanks to Ifor for a much gentler puzzle than his Listener. I was aware of the “other one” but only saw the shorter version. I’ve never really got on with the medium - I am too easily distracted (or else fall asleep!)

Doesn't the fact the line before the / is shorter than the one immediately after it clearly indicate in which order to put the first names of the programmes?
