Hi Lumen,

7d - anagram including 2 single letter abbreviations - "elderly" is part of the definition. A word I've never come across before

28d - definition is "secure holding arms" (think motorbike passenger)

Late to this hugely enjoyable and informative puzzle for which many thanks to Luxor. "blessed thistle" had me head-scratching but t'internet came up with its Latin name - Centaurea benedicta.
