What a pleasure this was. Gentle, but so well-crafted. Although it wasn’t too challenging I learned a couple of previously unfamiliar words in solving 5d &14d. Lots of contenders for COD: 8a and 1a. I liked 18d too but for me the winner is 20d for its elegant simplicity.FOI:2d. LOI:15d.

Morning, all. Yes, that was fun and fairly easy except for 15D? Any hints?

And 8A was indeed a cracker. Thanks, Everyman

Metaphot for "formality" derived from "having taken pains to make formal dress look as good as possible" found in toast and similar products.

I thought it was great fun today, 8a one of the best of its kind. I think we have had 12 across quite recently?

daz @5: I have to disagree with you - I think it's a fine clue. Remember that this is the Everyman, and not intended to be genius level.

Actonhighstreet,
Well remembered! Here is 6d from Everyman 4,006 in August last year…

6. What corrupt régimes may yield? (7)

I am here to provide some balance to the conversation.

I find this ridiculously difficult compared to some recent Everyman puzzles where have solved about half the clues.

Today I can solve 5 clues!

And in November 2022 it seems: good to see Everyman keeping an important issue alive!
