I agree a really fun puzzle, and at an appropriate ToY, that brought back a few memories...many thanks to Ifor

Biggus, the preamble says “Solvers must use the title to name the premier example”. That should confirm it pretty clearly.

And, cor! Ifor on his usual dazzling form. A great puzzle.

Great puzzle.
Didn't see the theme coming at all. (Not my area of interest.)
Literally had to shade all the uncheckeds and stare!
Then a lovely penny drop.

Enjoyed this. Have the theme and at least some of the examples but have some gaps in SW corner. Assistance with 44a would be appreciated: He's covered in bombast, supporting America in retreat (8).

Notnil, “he’s covered” is the definition. It parses 2, 2, 4, an unusual noun formed from a common word meaning to take out protection.

Quisling. Many thanks. I didn't know that form of the verb.

My big word only has eleven letters ?

DFG, the word definitely has 12 letters - each half is a word on its own, the first one is plural, the second isn't.

Ta Malone. The "ality" threw me off; I was counting them instead of ignoring.
