Biggus, the preamble says “Solvers must use the title to name the premier example”. That should confirm it pretty clearly.

And, cor! Ifor on his usual dazzling form. A great puzzle.

Great puzzle.
Didn't see the theme coming at all. (Not my area of interest.)
Literally had to shade all the uncheckeds and stare!
Then a lovely penny drop.

Enjoyed this. Have the theme and at least some of the examples but have some gaps in SW corner. Assistance with 44a would be appreciated: He's covered in bombast, supporting America in retreat (8).

Notnil, “he’s covered” is the definition. It parses 2, 2, 4, an unusual noun formed from a common word meaning to take out protection.

DFG, the word definitely has 12 letters - each half is a word on its own, the first one is plural, the second isn't.
