I enjoyed this, but as with most puzzles involving extra words there were several clues with a redundant word which did not appear in the extra word clues required. (Not the most felicitous sentence perhaps.) Without giving too much away, an example is 13 where the word "discount" is superfluous: the Chambers definition uses the word "voucher" unadorned as to its purpose. There were at least two others. Editors have to be stricter about unnecessary words where extra words are thematic. Having had my little grumble I confess to being stumped by 29. The last five letters are clear enough, but where's the definition? Is it an &lit?

The def is "knock" as in criticize. "HM out" could be clued cryptically with the clue's answer.

29 - First word is def and the wordplay is a cryptic anagram (bad) hence the '?'.

The point with 'extra word' clues is that the extra word is not simply redundant but its presence actively prevents the clue from being solved, ie the extra word 'must be removed prior to solving'. One could argue that preambles should be more explicit in that respect, but it's not an uncommon gimmick.

Thanks to Ranunculus for an entertaining puzzle. I’ve never understood the appeal of the theme but given its status as national treasure I’m sure it is entirely my loss.

I have the character and the 5 letter name (by working backwards from the character as I too had too many extra words!) however I can only identify two 'loved ones' on the lhs.
Any hints on how to find the others please?
