I think I have a completed grid but have not worked out all the letters that should be dropped. Should there only be 9? Are they meant to make a word? What happens when two letters have to drop?

Only nine clues are affected but with some of them losing two letters you have enough to fill the bottom row (their anagram is two words).

...sorry, only eight clues are affected.

Thanks to Phi for a testing challenge and a thought provoking theme. The discontinuous highlighting at the end bamboozled me for some minutes but the “process” was clearly present

For completeness I should have added “and the discontinuity was appropriate”.

Thanks to drxx for that hint about actually removing the letters. Endgame went from impossible to trivial! Great puzzle from Phi, and descriptive of a sorry state of affairs which apparently will only get worse.

Thanks to Norah and whoever noticed the duplicate “IQ 1884” thread that I erroneously created - without looking for “Inquisitor 1884”. Mea culpa.
