Many thanks to Kruger for a fun challenge. Should satisfy anyone who was disappointed by this week’s Listener! One loose end: I didn’t spot the definition for the entry at 35 in the other clues.

Jack I believe it's 5A/30A. Archaic term for "straw" de-tailed. Maybe??

Full grid achieved. Highlights highlighted. Only things I can't work out is the parsing for the "High calibre non British" and "revolutionary cause overheard" solutions!

Beautiful. Thanks both. I can now free myself from the burden of having to think about this any more!

Thanks, Thom. I had the wordplay from 5a but somehow couldn’t see the bleedin’ obvious definition in 30. Thanks for scratching that itch!

Took me a few hours, most of which were taken up in trying to understand the preamble. The bit in parentheses in the second paragraph is there, I believe, simply to confuse.

Lumen, 10a is an old variety of apple (in Bradford's). 'Idiot' (6), minus first letter, and with extra letter, + 'larger', losing outside letters.

Thanks Mattrom.
That just leaves me with 3d. No words fit with my crossers and I can't see how any of those can be wrong. Any words of wisdom on 3d welcome!
