S&T sounds on the higher end

Have to assume that there is a real doozy in store for us, after a few at (let's say) the gentle end of the spectrum.

The preamble might help with the title.

I suspect looking up the initials will help.

Certainly a very gentle puzzle. Woodlouse @3, I think 31 is one of two entries that appear “like-ish” but are not thematic and don’t fit the title. Both have definitions and 31 is in Chambers, very much not as a name.

Many more of these will mean the the Listener will no longer be a unique puzzle, but just an occasionally very difficult one. The Times is now £4 on a Saturday - is a 90 minute solve worth that - I don't think so. And I have no knowledge of the theme, but some rather simple clues resolved that problem.

gitto - unless you particularly want the paper copy, my monthly subscription to their online service is considerably less than you're paying. You might want to consider that route. I had to phone them but it was worth it.

The on-line subscription also avoids having several kilos of waste paper to recycle and there is always a chunky discount available if you hum and haw a bit about renewing.

I pay £5 a month for access to all the puzzles every day as well as the Crossword Club which is where the Listener is. It also includes more news articles than I care to read.
