Still struggling to fill grid, but 95% there! Have one clash missing still.
I need help with 29d, 38d, 39a.
Oh and if there's an extra letter in the wordplay for 18a I can't see it.
Thanks, maybe if I can get full grid, I can solve the code etc!

Lumen, 29 D might help with the clashes...
It's a popular lunch, snack , carb item - and also a word meaning warm, cosy etc. The usual 'none' gets dropped (none's wasted).
39. 'That's beginning' gives the last letter, that comes up after a three letter word for 'to flutter' (think of eyelashes). The four letter answer is a sheet of wadding.

For 18a the word before 'commercial' loses the extra letter (then reverse both for the answer).
38d - the 3 letter animals (Greek) go around the obvious 'new'.

So the definition is first four words of 18a? Would never have seen that. Wanted a word for tradition.
Is definition of 34a hunch? Still can't see how that one works.

Yes, first 4 words.
34 - 'hunch(ed)' is part of the wordplay and its synonym (5 letters) has an extra letter - def is 'subatomic particles'.

That would give me an unusual extra letter.

This is a work of art, which took some time to complete !
Doing the crossword was the easy bit.
The instructions all worked for me.
All the more rewarding because I’ve been up 36A.

Dfg2, I enjoyed it too, and hope my earlier posts didn’t imply otherwise. The only nagging unease among some posters, I think, is whether what is put in the boxes beneath the grid represents anything other than encoding of the thematic context. Does it spell or mean anything? If it does, then some of us have missed the final flourish
