At the end I thought that this puzzle was a little bit over-engineered, but everybody else seemed to like it.

woodlouse, I feel that time allows hints which would have been excessive on Saturday afternoon to become acceptable on late Monday. Does anyone disagree ?

I think this is a hit too far (and I'm not averse to hints generally), sorry.

Unlike others, I'm stuck at the north east rather than the north west! 4sc, 10ac , 6dn and 7dn are refusing to budge, annoyingly.

Kindred2, 4a. def. is a slang word for 'pounds sterling'. 1 letter in 'devastators'.
10a. def. is 'judged truly'. Chambers has it as 'truly judged'. Remove 1 letter from a word for 'clever'.
Neither has a letter extra/lacking.

Woodlouse, your post provides an answer, not a hint. Williamseal has already indicated that he had that answer.

kindred2 - for 7 down seem my post @21. 6d is in set B and definition is at the very end of the clue.

mattrom, as Malone points out every week "hints only please, no answers"!! I think that is a pretty fair and clear instruction, irrelevant of the day of the week.

btw mattrom, my last post means I support your dislike of an answer being posted.
