Quite a quick solve for me but it didn't feel easy by any means. There's a few new words on me and I had to use the solver to confirm 27a. The parsing for the most part was very clear from Pasquale so i was confident even unknown words were correct (the much discussed 25a excepted and I'm still not sure about it).

FOI and also my joint COD with 16d was 4d.

LOI 15a.

Thanks Pasquale for a good challenge.

Interesting that Jono. Totally missed. Have you solved 16d yet?

Like Rogissimo it took me a long while to enter an answer - all the way to 3d (well at least he was good for something). But after that all went in quite quickly until 25A. Like Rocky, not at all sure of the passing nor of which of two possible answers is right. COYG.

I didn't get 25 straightaway - another with the wrong last word.
For the answer to be right, the "maybe" is doing a lot of work! Other possibilities are less ambiguous. Also the "nick" is a bit loose.
11d my favourite - I like the expression.
17a a new word for me.

Yes, I had heard of 27a, but only because it crops up in a niche area of my work. On the other hand, quite a few scientific words have been known to produce a ‘What?!’ from me!

chrise: I think the ‘maybe’ is doing a lot less work than it would have been doing if the solution had been what we all first thought it was!
I think ‘nick’ is fine - in one of its senses it shares a definition with the word needed for the solution.
