...and another old grumpy here. Two clued entries unsolved, and I truly can't be doing with random guesses. I've chucked it😒

Bobby... was that a typo? Two 'clued' entries unsolved? I think, hope, you meant the dazzling, ingenious etc etc unclued entries?

I managed the names easily enough, I don't think I did much guessing - they could well be wrong.

Names that anyone under 30 will struggle to identify! This was very much a Boomer’s crossword.

I have skipped through most of the clued but cannot parse 42a

Papal letters bishop cut back (6)

I am sure it should be obvious but sadly not to me.
The unclued I think I have three of the four trios and need all of the fourth.
I am a boomer, too, so these should be ok for me!
Any hints gratefully received.

AlocinR, the answer starts with a single letter abbreviation, followed by the reversal('back) of a fairly usual word meaning to cut.

An additional irritation for me was the realisation that the 27 unchecked letters of the unclued lights do NOT include the letters in the 3 cells that are checked only by another unclued light. I appreciate now that is what the preamble tries to say, but given the crossword editor has missed a typo in that preamble sentence, it's difficult to be sure whether to go with what is stated or what one thinks it meant to say. I had expected that the sentence was intended to help with ALL the letters that do not overlap with a clued light.
