Thanks quisling. I see how the first three words give the answer (3,2), but not how "candidate" helps the wordplay.

It's actually a Ralph McTell song, but he wrote it for Fairport Convention. I've not been able to find the studio version, but it's better.

The fifteensquared blog has explained "candidate". I was splitting it up too much.
