Not sure how she could have been referenced... perhaps in a jumble in row 12? ....(what, too soon?)

So I think I've finished but I don't understand the endgame. I have changed 4 cells to get a relevant 7 letter string, which I presume I should highlight. But I don't understand how that 'illustrates the outcome' or the significance of what has been erased (as referenced earlier in the thread)?

Also can't see where the first 2 letters of 4d come from in the wordplay or parse the wordplay of 39a.

Thanks

4d, Chambers gives lib = Liber (Latin), book

39, bleat = MAA (endless), removed from CINEMA, around the usual for "A PAIR"

Thanks for the comments. The event was the most sensational in horse racing history as well as political history.
I think I have solved at least 4 puzzles over the years dealing with the
incident, so my intention was to deliberately ignore it.
Hope it only put you off the scent for a short while.

Hi to you. I'm a solver also, and like to see how others go about it, and whether they liked it or not.

Hi - Enjoyed the 'curved ball' - The 'political' obviuosly overshadowed the 'outcome' ... which was news to me ...

Hello Kirsanov,

Thanks for the challenge, I really enjoyed it.
You certainly threw me for a time, I was looking for the human protagonist and other equines involved, until I saw what looked like a horsey name in SW!
Hope to see you again soon....

I put this aside with a little under half the grid filled as relatives from NZ arrived. Came back to it this morning and thoroughly enjoyed it, some very clever clues with very precise wordplay often hiding in plain sight. The transition in the endgame was neat and did indeed “illustrate the outcome”! Dodging the obvious ED connection was a nice bit of misdirection. As EP (rather than ED) is a direct ancestor on my mother’s side, I fell into the trap all too readily! Thanks to Kirsanov.
