Many thanks Prospero

I had no trouble getting 69 with your hint. I'd already thought of an anagram without L, but hadn't hit on the right extra letters.

66 still eludes me, but I might get a PDM for the synonyms.

I'm not doing very well today. The theme is one I'm not familiar with. I stopped listening to "popular" music back in 1974, with very few exceptions. I have no young person to help me.

I'll have another go tomorrow, but I've got quite bored with it today.

Oh dear - started this morning and didn't get into it - out for the day and picked it up again this evening - all completed , but one thing missing - satisfaction ! - what a chore - I find anagrams come to me quite quickly and sorted most ( with no knowledge of the theme! ) I know I am old school and loved Araucaria with a passion - what was missing with this one was the wry smile , the chuckle when the penny dropped and the respect for the clever clueing - am I just showing my age with my hankering for how things were ?

Agree with Snowwhite. I really look forward to these big puzzles on Bank Holidays. There are only three of them in the year so don't understand the complaints!
However, I'm finding this difficult and the theme means very little to me. But I'm determined to finish it.
Thanks for all the help given so far.

The themes are well outside my comfort zone by about 50 years. I have solved one of the anagrams and recognise one of the theme words but I think that's where I'll finish.

I'm generally up with the themes and am chipping away. I can see how for various reasons people are frustrated or otherwise. I do like the civilised and discreet nature of this particular thread (?). Other crossword threads (?) give the answers away. For me the point is not getting things stretches my mind a wee bit. Hats off to the setters. They could be working in the top of government or corporation. Maybe some do. So, again, thanks. I don't think they're getting Taylor Swift scale remuneration.

Ps. Where the heck does the Brummie band fit in?

Quote from Hancock's Half Hour

There's Adam Faith earning three times as much as the prime minister. Is that right? Is that right? I suppose it depends on if you like Adam Faith and what your politics are.

That's half an arm!

Or is it a hint?

Cheers either way.

A thoroughly enjoyable few hours. No cricket, golf or chess knowledge necessary. I drew on past conversations with two younger generations as well as my own life experience. FOI a 4 letter down normal clue and the rest followed having first solved most of the anagrams. The alphabetical order helped. Still stuck on the 'new legal society'. Learnt about a hitherto unknown holy book.
