krauton

I have managed to transfigure 4 of the entries with synonyms
but cant find the 5th entry to configure. There is an obvious
long down entry but I cant find a suitable item to change it to.
Any hints thanks.

Krauton, my long entry is defined as being a P (variety) that has been crossed to achieve the colouring of an S variety. A lot of letters had to be changed in the original, but it started with the same first two letters...

I have 2 of the 3 entries without clashes. I have the long entry and a 7 letter entry but can’t find the third. Is it a short one? Thanks for any hints.

Gee thanks. Tried 40a but would never have thought of that answer.

I’m being particularly dense with this. I have a full grid, with three cIashes but I really can’t interpret the preamble. Are the “synonyms” just types of the thing suggested by the unclued entry and not actually synonyms, or are they synonyms of the affected entries? And is the enumeration of 38a wrong, or is something more convoluted going on? Bear of very little brain today!

Jack, 38 is just an error, typo.

Do you have the song from the unclued entry? The second syllable of the first word shows you exactly what is to be changed and it appears in several clues. The last word of the song shows what it is to be changed to (pretty obvious anyway).

Thanks Malone and Bunty. I will have another look later and will no doubt kick myself soundly. I am vaguely aware of only one song and the second syllable of that would be “Ry”, so I doubt that it’s the one you meant, Malone!
