6d parses from the bottom up as 2,4,1,4 with 1 (American) inserted in the final 4.

3a is an anagram (Everyman likes single word anagrams, so worth looking out for them)
10a is one word inside another, indicted by “to wear”

A couple of tricks:

it's past tense so, that should give you the last two letters

It's a repeat of an action so, the first two letters are often used to indicate that something is being done again.

If it helps, I will iterate that again.
