Jack, 3d is a word of 9 letters which I'd never encountered (although the late Anne Bradford had), defined by the first 3 words of the clue - misprint in the 3rd. It's borrowed from German and noted in Chambers as being "obs". Your first 4 letters should be suggested by the 4th word of the clue, then standard abbreviation for contralto in what could be a bass.

The 3rd character is suggested by the corrections to 3-7 down.

And if you can see three of the characters in the grid Jack, you should have a fighting chance of spotting where the fourth is to complete the pattern, even if you can't figure it out from the corrections.
