One word in each accross clue must be cut short befote solving, and removed letters give a relevant verse missing some words.

I have a full grid, the full verse and the author, the required altered entry suggested by the verse but I can't, despite much scanning, find tbe nine cells to change "change nine cells to show how the message was passed on". I do have the line in the grid showing the messenger being informed.

And hints very aporeciated.

Slugabed, I tried replacing exactly that line you found. It seems to work, though I don’t see the final version of one of the intersecting words in my Chambers.

slugabed: you're certainly on the right lines.
graham: it seems to work for me. A couple of the words look a bit odd, but they're valid.
I can't for the life of me get 35 - nothing is convincing me.

Biggus56 at 35 I put a word for “throw” found in Bradford’s. It’s a loose fit for “bung”, perhaps in the sense of squash or crush.

If you look at the 2nd headword of the answer to 35 in Chambers, it's exactly equivalent to the 3rd for BUNG.

OK sorted now, and as you say it serms to work ..... and I've assumed tbe spelliing of the 'T' word is an 'ed' spelling/version ending rather than the 'ld' version in the original verse- LOL- have a good Sunday afternoon guys!

Thanks, Graham9.
I found it, but can't say I've heard/used it in either of those senses. I live and learn.

Thom, the last word in 15 is the definition. In the wordplay, think of what difficulty a long distance runner might hit or have to overcome.
