Look north west cockie.

North west for the first position described by the across extras, surely? The opposite, more or less, for the second?

I can’t work out the first move to get real words. I have him landing to the right of the petitioner , and forming new real words.

You need to replace the start of an answer, not the whole word. So if you search for longer words beginning with your character, you should find it

I've been fighting Covid since last Saturday and this puzzle since Sunday. I have a full grid, the name to be highlighted and I think I know the petitioner after reading a synopsis of the film indicated by the 9 extra down words. (Petitioner is 5 ,5?) I can't however see the petitioner's name anywhere in the grid in order to start moving them and how to move them. I have 7, 7, 4, 7 as the words generated by the across clues.

AP, I think you've got in a bit of a muddle with this one!
If you have the name to be highlighted (4,5), then you have the petitioner You don't move the petitioner, you move the king. His moves are in the form of the 7,7,4,7.

PS I hope you've shaken off Covid.

Thank you for that Malone. I expressed myself very badly this morning. I have the person doing the 7, 7, 4, 7 and thus the blank cells where that person starts. I've looked at the hints about North-West and South-East and the video link kindly provided by Krauton but for the moment can't see either step that would create new words. I think the first should be horizontal and the second vertical and I also suspect that the first letter will appear in an unchecked cell in each case. As for the Covid I'm having frequent headaches which are made worse by the humid weather round here. I'll have a break and then go back to it.

I now have the first move. As always I can't see the wood for the trees.

Thanks, AP - glad you're getting there! I found the second move to be less fearsome in a way - I just tracked down somewhere that would lend itself to real words. The 'reorienting him relative to his petitioner...' helped as I knew roughly where I thought he should end up. Symmetry turned out to be useful too...
