Think about a famous character who might most appositely fit the physical description in the hidden quotation and look up his real name!

Brendan, I went with the one that left the rest of the grid in the state described in the first half of the quotation.

I've got a full grid apart from 38a. I'm not sure what the last letter should be.

Felipedon, I've got D, from the four letter word for 'fat', a type of fat. The (usual) Scottish landowner loses the last letter (close to) poor?, with the ? becoming the third letter in the entry.
