Ah! Thanks, Buddy. I fell for the red herring. But then, 'found' and 'concealed' are doing the same job. Nonetheless, i found it an engrossing puzzle.

I thought 23D didn't quite work as a clue - it seems to be a definition of the answer plus a definition of a spoonerism of the answer - ie it's the first kind of clue mentioned in the preamble, except that the subsidiary indication is just a definition. Or am I missing something?

If you treat the clue as a double def, the the wordplay is a definition. I had to think about that for a while to convince myself, however, so I could be wrong.

I am finally going to raise the white flag and ask "Where is the spoonerism in 8d"? That one is driving me batty.

8D is the first type of clue. The spoonerism relates to the first 3 letters of the answer (the spoonerism itself is 4 letters and is a mining term).

Sorry, not seeing it. I thought the spoonerism needed to give a definition of the full answer (after "un-spoonerizing"?)
