As always I'm trailling behind with this. I've still 4 clues to solve but will go back to those shortly. A pointer to where the answer to the first clue and the philosopher go in the grid would be much appreciated.

AP, the first clue is horizontal, the philosopher is vertical - and they intersect...

Thanks to Kruger for an excellent EV. Some challenging but always fair clues and a gridfill that was a pleasure: the choices seemed almost always unambiguous. (For what it’s worth I started with 3d and the intersecting acrosses and it all proceeded pretty smoothly from there.) Despite the multiple options from the extra words the highlighting instruction was fairly readily extracted and the job done.

Thanks again Malone. I've now a full grid and need to put the extra words in order. I've passed the place where the notoriety was obtained on many occasions.

AP, thanks. I'm never sure if my 'help' is at the right level, so was pleased you got on OK and filled the grid.

Your help is always at the right level Malone and is much appreciated. I suspect I have made a mistake (or mistakes) somewhere along the way as no amount of grid-staring (at least 3 hours on and off) is yielding what needs to be highlighted. I'll have another look before I go out and also check to see if I've filled the grid correctly or nave the wrong instruction from the extra words or both.

Apologies for not having got back to you earlier Malone. I got back home to find the internet down. I had another look at it while waiting for the outage to rectify itself and realised where I had gone wrong. It's all sorted now. Thank you once again for your help.
