Can anyone who has completed this tell me whether some of the extra words in the clues are an even number of letters long ie
there are two middle letters. So you could choose either the first
letter, the middle two letters or the last letter from these words.

Krauton, I haven't got my copy to hand but I definitely had some words that had an even number of letters. My tactic was to ignore the 'middle' - I jotted down just the first and last. When it came to reordering the clues, to get the instruction, I had no problems. This might have been because some of the words filled themselves by the time I came to put it together!

To confirm Malone’s answer, if an extra word had an even number of letters, there was no middle letter. Rather than having a choice of two, the middle was ignored. It was just first or last

I'm really struggling with the endgame. I have 96% certainty about the extra words, but nothing leaps out. Would knowing the word lengths be helpful? I'm familiar with the event described, but none of the words I would expect to see seem to be there.

Cockie, I've not got my notes, but it started off 4,8,5,6....

Crates, I've had a quick look at the puzzle. I think (hope) the rest is 4,2,3, 5.

I'm slightly foxed. While the clues are (slowly) yielding to me, I just counted the clues in order to try to identify the two unclued entries referred to in the preamble. No matter which way I count it - up/down/back to front - I see 38 entries in the grid and 37 clues. So there seems only to be one unclued entry (excl perimeter), of 11 letters.

Can anyone confirm, please?

Sorry, ignore my last post. I had indeed missed one grid entry, so I have 39 entries and 37 clues!
