Dont want to get into a row, but just to point out that current puzzle backlog with the editors is 2 years +. They are far from short of puzzles.

Perhaps this puzzle came to the top of the pile in recognition of an anniversary which falls today.

26a - Def is last word. 4-letter "refuge" reversed + 3-letter "pieces", losing first letter + 2-letter "church"

I hope that by wading in to the debate I shan't offend anybody; because I very much appreciate the tips that contributors to this forum have given me over the last 18 or so months and long may it continue. I do, however, feel that this forum might benefit from a 'community' rather than a 'competitive' ethos. In a community we are in competition only with ourselves - thus even when confronted with a (comparatively) easy Listener, we can still delight in beating the stop watch. Yes, I finished this one in a few hours but last year I would have taken 2 days. So I am satisfied with my effort and grateful that somebody took the time to compile this challenge. If we are a community - and a friendly one - we should be supportive of all members of the community whether newbies, setters or veterans. Yes, let's be honest about our preferences, hard or easy, but let's have a thought for how our comments come across to each other. Or, indeed, to a casual outside observer. The comments on easier Listeners make me chuckle, but we could sometimes be accused of being rather like a top set at an elite boarding school. I'm assuming some of you, at least, remember what it was like in the top set at an elite boarding school. :)

Sorry Will37, just realised you were correcting a previous post not asking for help.

Many thanks Will37

I had 'Den' as the refuge! No wonder I couldn't see it.

Whistler makes some valid points.

He/she is correct when implying that some comments might be construed as snotty or elitist, even if that wasn't the author's intention. He is also correct in asserting that this is a community of solvers of diverse ability, and I feel that comments should respect that.
