Yes- it’s a 13x13 grid, so I’d worked that out. Unfortunately, not knowing the work is a major stumbling block.

The18racer, it’s not really necessary to know the work. If you google “famous quotes from …” the two-word phrase will show up. But you need to understand the preamble. It asks you to represent the phrase. So if it was “scrambled eggs”, for example, you might highlight GSEG

Can anyone help with parsing the first 2 letters of 41ac? I know the answer and I believe I have understood the straightforward parsing of the last 4 letters. 41a: Thunder traps Poles in Glasgow.

With that on niggling query, this was a mercifully gentle puzzle after a few weeks struggling.

Espebe, 41a. is a double definition. Ignore the capital in 'Poles'.

Thanks for the tips, all done now. I guess the presence of the golf-related nickname is a coincidence, but I couldn't see past it!

Ah...

The penny- (or should I say "pennies?) has/have dropped.

I was looking for an anagram in the middle seven cells of each line.

Doh!

Thanks for all the help, everybody.

Gentle and satisfying solve this week. When I declared it 'straightforward' the other half fell about laughing and opined '...and about 800 of 70 million Brits would completely agree with you.' Anyway, I enjoyed the counterpoint to last weeks huffin'. and (thanks) Puffin. :)

Very, very good I thought. Gentle but not ridiculously so, and a 30 second grid stare (given I am familiar with the work and I did not FUTLIAB). Splendid.

And I dont believe the unrequired 5 letter word is a coincidence. Must have been left there deliberately, which is a nice touch.
