The theme...
Help towards the theme may also be sought here. The 'help' should be a pointer, just a nudge in the right direction - enough to help a struggling solver, not enough to spoil things for others! Any posts which, even inadvertently, reveal too much of the theme are likely to be removed.

The Listener is a unique puzzle and should be treated with respect.

Is there any alternative (before making any entries) to adding up the clues of each length to determine the lengths of the unclued lights? Has anyone done this?

I thought to do this and I've found it mightily confusing as there seem to be 9 spaces of 7 letters and there are 10 clues for 7-letter answers.

Yes, a good puzzle.

I'm very worried, as I have over 20 answers, but no idea where to put any of them, with the unclued entries causing extra confusion. For example, I have 3 of the 4 eight-letter answers, but there are 8 potential slots for them.

I also notice comment 3, causing me further concern! Any tips please?

Having cold solved 34 clues I have now hit a brick wall. I cannot fit the 9 seven letter answers that I have (I'm missing the last one) into the grid!! I am baffled.
