What is the point of making this so difficult?

As a struggling solver, I always look forward to “easier” crosswords like Everyman and Quiptic.

Druh

In case you missed it I'm reposting Jono's link from another thread.

I believe this could be a perfect way for you to start honing your solving skills

''... the Guardian has launched a new Saturday puzzle called the “Quick Cryptic” designed for those just learning cryptic solving.''

Here is Puzzle No.1 also set by Carpathian…

Thanks

I managed to solve just under half of it.

That's a good start. And because the preamble explains the type of clues involved it becomes that much easier to analyse the ones you weren't able to solve yourself

Totally agree with the comments earlier here - this wasn’t what we expect from an Everyman at all - themes usually reserved for Prizes. I’m only an occasional R4 listener so didn’t get some of the references. I had heard of the containers, pretty sure they have made it here from across the pond - thought I guess the Kilner variety are more common in the UK (which I seem to remember from an episode of Who Do You Think You Are were invented by Jeremy Clarkson’s ancestor!).

Hopefully all back to normal next weekend.

Posted by Alan Connor over on 225…

“ This weekend there’s a slight nudging of the furniture. The prize this week is by the same setter who has said hello to new solvers in the quick cryptic. The Everyman uses its longstanding license to go themed once every few years. And the quiptic has leapt forward/back a day (and in fact will remain a weekend puzzle). “

No-one has mentioned it so I'm probably missing something obvious, but I can't work out 24a. I have the letters from 14d and 15d.
Thanks in advance for any hints.

Hi Becky, it’s a “music producer” in the sense it’s used to play music on. The award is three letters.

Hi Becky.
Try changing 'Award describing' to 'Honour around' and take the next few words of the clue literally.

Thanks Jono and Phil for the hints, I thought of that word (it was about the only one which would fit) but discounted it as I couldn't parse it.
