I thought that bellows as a device is always singular, but apparently it can be plural too. Is that more common in the UK?

Aristo, I think it works in the same way as 'jeans', 'scissors' etc - a plural noun where two halves make a whole; so strictly speaking 'a pair of bellows'

The difference is that I would say “a bellows” but never “a jeans”.
