Thanks for that, Malone. I had seen the potential meaning of "essentially " and "eviscerated" but I was still puzzled until I finally realised that the thematic treatment was to be applied to a word in the clue rather than the answer itself. Wot a numpty!

That was a twisty one. Before I submit .. I need to check 22D. I am presuming that I enter a synonym for "poorly" as per instructions. But can't see wordplay

I no longer have my submission but from memory if you added a single letter for ton back into you word for poorly would you get a word for pole?
