That was a bit of a brain workout! Favourites are 19a and 19d. Not sure how to parse 8 d

Hi Edc,

8d - It's a homophone/'can be heard' with the answer sounding like a word meaning "outburst" as in 'blast', 'storm', 'hurricane' etc.

That is what I thought. It just seemed a bit loose with the specific homophone. Ah well, it was 5 am.

Thanks Edc, I know what you mean, I've always associated that word with the weather, but it is in Chambers thesaurus so no complaints:-)

Good day all. Hopeless first run through on the across clues. Then a few downs fell into place thanks to long anagrams. Enjoyed 13d and 10a but my CoD is 25a. Usual primarily, hidden and rhyming pair - pair being appropriate for 20a. Have a good day.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard 22D used but the solution seems obvious as an ‘included’.

Started the day by finishing yesterday’s Prize (I’d had a busy day) and the last 4 clues of that took me as long as this - though I’m not complaining, I did enjoy it. FOI 1d, LOI 14d. Not sure I have a COD but I would like to propose a new category - WOD (Word of the Day) for 23 which is a lovely word that I wish I could use more often in daily life rather than just crosswords.

i don't often attempt the everyman, and if this one is typical, i don't think i'm missing much. i haven't finished (and don't think i'll bother too), but i have question marks against seven of the clues i've solved.

for example, why "polar" in 1a? most aren't. where's the definition in 2d?

Cymro, agree 22d is not something I’ve seen used. The defn. should really be “on the Black?” but that would spoil the surface.

It’s not in Chambers but I did find it in Collins and the OED has it as hyphenated 1-3, dating from 1858. Nothing else fits there that isn’t an acronym (apart from a medical word for bones) so a bit of “grid crunch” has crept in I suspect.
