clever puzzle , more to it than first appeared

Nearly there but struggling to get the (w)hole. A prompt for 11d would be welcome: Gardners' tools zap ticks (5).

Notnilk, it's a tradename rather than anything like spades, rakes etc. Ticks refers to units of time, not insects of marks or approval.
